Each episode of a series often ends with suspense, curiosity or emotional tension. This deliberate design creates a sense of urgency and stress about what will happen next. Since all episodes are instantly available, viewers feel compelled to continue watching instead of waiting for the next day, as with traditional television.

Streaming platforms have removed two major barriers that used to give viewers natural breaks: waiting and advertisements. Without commercial interruptions or scheduled telecasts, people can easily move from one episode to another. Most OTT platforms automatically play the next episode within 15 to 20 seconds. This brief transition barely allows viewers to make a conscious choice about stopping. The brain’s reward system gets activated by anticipation and before the viewer realises, they are already immersed in the next episode.

OTT platforms continuously track viewing patterns, likes and preferences. They then use recommendation algorithms to suggest similar shows and movies that match the viewer’s interests. This constant stream of personalised suggestions keeps users engaged for longer periods and reduces the likelihood of leaving the platform.
5. The Psychological Impact
Watching content repeatedly activates the brain’s dopamine reward pathway, which gives a temporary feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. Over time, viewers associate relaxation and comfort only with watching shows, which can reduce motivation to engage in other activities.
